Why Guelph Matters

Citizens have written in and described what they like most about this fine City that we all call home.

I moved from London Ontario to Guelph almost 3 years ago and soon after sold our second car. My wife and I love living in a city that is still small enough to walk most places. One of our first impressions of Guelph was of a vibrant downtown full of diversity and activity. London's downtown core suffered for years, and is only now recovering. I hope people in Guelph realize what a valuable gift a vibrant downtown is for a city of this size.

I love Guelph because of the connections I make... connections that give richness to my life in my community. My community connections include: having fun with neighbourhood chats and street parties, exploring Guelph's parks and trails, working with a newly formed neighbourhood group, volunteering at the civic museum where community history and heritage are nutured, learning about Guelph's cultural and architectural history through history talks and walks.

Prior to moving to Guelph 2 years ago, I lived in Sao Paulo, Brazil for 7 years. I struggled to make the city better in all the ways you can possibly imagine. Everything there is extremely chaotic and solutions always sound like impossible dreams. We decided to move to Canada and found in Guelph simply everything we've always wanted to have in the place we call home. Until now I just can't stop looking at things and thinking to myself: "See, this is how I thought things could be! This is what I had in mind". And lots of times, Guelph goes even beyond that.

Guelph is my kind of town because I am still alive in part because Guelph has a richness of walking and biking opportunities. The river trails, riverside parks, and the downtown are especially inviting, but there are interesting places to walk or bike to throughout the city. In fact, some of our local trails also connect to other communities, making Guelph an ideal place to live for those of us who prefer to enjoy the outdoors while going from place to place.

The plethora of faces and aromas at the Farmers' market, the shady reprieve of Exhibition Park, the paddlers' canopy at Guelph Lake, coffeeat With the Grain, the readers' reviews at the Bookshelf, the gorgeous homes and quiet streets, Hillside, neighbourhood ice rinks, wild boulevard gardens, the Jazz Festival tent, the diverse talents of our local musicians and artists, the passionate citizenry, the Film Festival, the trails around Ignatius, the library, the G.O.R.B.A. trails, the Multi-cultural Festival and so much more ...all within minutes from home.

I love the closeness of a smaller city, particularly ours. In a worldwhere the gravest problems are often just media abstractions, we areable to take hold, to live and work together on a manageable scale. We can create a park, clean up a river, support a struggling family of new Canadians, stimulate our artistic culture, conserve water and energy, invest in the beauty of our surroundings, plan future development with intelligent care, and meet our friends on the street almost any time we stroll downtown. Guelph still has that increasingly rare privilege of being able to creatively and compassionately manage our immediate environment to our collective benefit, and feel intimately involved in the process.
